How can I tell the difference between genuine students and those who have only registered for the test?

Updated on

If students register via Osiris for the course exam only, they will also appear as participants in the Brightspace Class List. This can be confusing, as fewer students are present in class than you might expect based on the Class List. To ensure that you can still distinguish resit students from actual participants, adjustments must be made in advance when setting up the course in Osiris, so that regular participants are automatically placed in a group. You cannot do this yourself, but you can ask the person responsible for setting up courses for your programme. Your OSIRIS administrator can find instructions for this here.

Show real students

Go to the Class List for your course. By default, you will see all students enrolled on your course, including those who only wish to take the assessment and those who are no longer active on Brightspace. You can now filter out both types of students.

  1. Under Filter by click on Groups and select the OSIRIS CUR Course Groups category.
  2. Within the category, select the only group listed.
  3. Click on Apply.
  1. Click on Show search options to display additional search options, if they are not already visible.
  2. Tick the Active Status option and select Active.
  3. Click on the search icon.

You now have a list of all the actual participants in your course who have an active account in Brightspace. You can, for example, export this list to a CSV file.

Make the course content visible only to actual participants

Now that the actual students are in one group, you can make course materials, such as content, assignments, quizzes and announcements visible only to those students.

Release conditions

You can set a release condition for Announcements and Content topics. This allows you to specify that only students from the OSIRIS Group (the actual participants) are permitted to view the item. Read here to find out how to set up Release Conditions.

Special Access

To prevent students who have only registered for the exam in your course from submitting assignments or taking quizzes, you can set up special access for an Assignment or Quiz so that these are only visible to actual students. Read here how to set up Special Access for an Assignment, a Quiz or a Survey.
