Good preparation is essential for a professional and clear weblecture. Use the tips below to ensure you don't forget anything before, during, and after recording.
Table of conents
Preparation
1. Check the technology
- Turn on the room equipment: check that the equipment is turned on and select a source (PC or laptop).
- Microphone: wear the room's lapel microphone. You can pick this up at the reception desk or find it in the room.
Make sure the microphone is switched on and not set to ‘mute’. - Batteries: check that the microphone has sufficient battery power.
- Be on time. If something is not working technically, you can contact Audiovisual Services or the ICT Helpdesk.
- Consider copyright when using third-party material.
2. Prepare your environment
- Put your phone on silent.
- Inform colleagues or students that you are recording so that you are not disturbed.
- Warn students in advance that they are not allowed to take screenshots of the web lectures and that sharing web lectures, for example via social media, is not permitted.
- Avoid clothing with busy patterns or shiny materials. These can be distracting on camera.
- Make sure your presentation is well prepared and visually clear (not too much text, font size large enough).
- Wipe the board (if present) beforehand. A messy board = a messy image.
During the recording
1. Presentation behavior
- Stay in view: avoid walking back and forth outside the camera's range.
- Speak clearly: articulate calmly, vary your tone of voice.
- Use gestures sparingly: too much movement is distracting, but a little is just right.
- Repeat questions from the audience: the microphone often does not pick them up, so repeat them for the recording.
- Keep in mind that the recording continues during the break, both video and audio. The web lecture shows what you are doing on the computer. If you check your email during the break, this will also be visible in the web lecture. You can edit the recording afterwards. See this page.
2. Interaction & tools
- Use the (digital) board consciously: write large and clearly.
- Do not point your finger at the screen: use a digital pointer or the mouse pointer instead.
- Status light: When recording, the red light will turn on. When someone from Weblectures checks the equipment before recording begins, the red light will flash.
After the recording
1. Technical completion
- Clean up: put the microphone back in the charging station or return it to the reception desk if you picked it up there.
- Once you have received the link to the recording in your email, you can post it in Brightspace. You can also choose to edit the recording first. See this page.
- After you have received the link to a recording, the recording still needs to be processed by the system. Depending on the number of recordings made in a day, this can take until the next morning. All recordings will be ready to view no later than the day after they are made.
